I just bought an amazing Canon 10D digital SLR. I was just wondering if anyone had some tips on how to reduce noise?

The 10D does onboard on-the-fly blackframe noise reduction, so no need to bother with that. (I'm not sure if this is on by default, but I assume it would be; check the manual)

For further posthoc reduction, I'd suggest Neatimage. It's both a standalone app and a photoshop plugin.

There's a feature limited freeware version on the site. If you obtain the full version, you can download tailor-made noise reduction profiles specifically for the 10D (among many others)... This really can make a significant difference.

Personally I'd warn against overaggressive reduction. It can seem tempting at first, but can detract from the realism of the shot.

For pre-picture settings for night shots and such, try out dpreview's info page. Are you new to photography in general, or new to digital? Other then after-the-fact reduction techniques, digital and traditional methods for noise reduction are pretty similar..

There's also the thermal noise issue for CCD sensors... basically the hotter your camera is, the more noise you'll have. The degree to which this is controllable is somewhat limited, but so is the degree to which thermal effects are noticeable.

GAAAH!!! this camera is extremely frustrating. I haven't yet tried neatimage, but the amount of noise on some of my pictures even shooting RAW is disgusting. Shouldn't a $2000 camera take half-decent pictures!?!?? gaaargh.

What speed are you shooting at, I tend to aim around 100/200.
